Glutinous rice balls with four fillings from Chongqing, China

Tangyuan is a famous traditional Chinese snack. Its round shape symbolizes "reunion". Therefore, Chinese families gather together and eat tangyuan during Chinese New Year and the Mid-Autumn Festival.

In ancient Chinese records, the "Four Joys" are defined as:

Rain after a long drought,

Meeting an old friend far from home,

The wedding night,

Passing the imperial examination.

These four events were regarded as the happiest moments in ancient Chinese life, hence the name "Four Joys".

Recipes for tangyuan vary across China. In Chongqing, there is a specialty called Four-Joy Tangyuan, which contains four different fillings in one bowl, offering four distinct flavors: fresh, fragrant, savory, and sweet.
