Luohuasheng" (Peanuts) in Chinese Cuisine
Luohuasheng, or boiled peanuts, is a homestyle snack in China that everyone is fond of eating. There was a renowned Chinese writer named Xu Dishan (who was the teacher of Eileen Chang), whose pen name was Luohuasheng. His daughter, Xu Yanji, was also a famous Chinese writer who authored a well-known book titled The Daughter of Luohuasheng, an autobiography recounting her life experiences against the backdrop of that entire era in China. Since peanuts grow buried underground, the writer Xu Dishan told his daughter, "We should be like peanuts, working hard to grow in silence and bringing the taste of happiness to everyone." It is just like this plate of boiled peanuts—ordinary, delicious, and filled with the taste of happiness. To prepare Luohuasheng, the peanuts are washed thoroughly and boiled in a pot of water with seasonings such as Sichuan peppercorns, star anise, cassia bark, chili peppers, salt, and ginger, resulting in a fragrant, smooth, and tender texture that is exceptionally delicious.
